/ˈlɛsˌɣeːvə(n)/verb

How it is spelled and how it sounds

In the base verb 'geven', the open syllable 'ge-' has a long /eː/. When it becomes a closed syllable in the stem 'geef', the 'e' is doubled to preserve the long vowel sound, and the final /v/ devoiced to /f/.

In connected speech

In connected speech, the /s/ of 'les' and the /x/ of 'geven' merge smoothly, and in southern accents, the /x/ is softened to a palatal [ç] or voiced [ɣ].
